Ready or Not Making Content Changes for Console Release
The upcoming Ready or Not console ports will introduce some content changes compared to the original version of the game, Void Interactive has announced. While the differences aren't significant, the Ready or Not developer says it decided to outline them publicly for transparency purposes.
December 17 will mark the fourth anniversary of Ready or Not launching in early access. The tactical first-person shooter was treated to a full-fledged release almost exactly two years later, in December 2023. Since then, Void Interactive redirected some of its resources toward porting the game to consoles. The Irish developer recently committed to a July 15 release date for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game.
Sierra Entertainment's SWAT games may never come to current-gen consoles, but at least Ready or Not will be there to fill in the gaps.
Ahead of next month's launch, Void Interactive revealed that the upcoming Ready or Not console ports won't be identical to the PC original. The studio elected to make some targeted changes to the game's content in order to ensure it meets console certification standards from Sony and Microsoft. These include reducing several depictions of nudity and torture, as well as altering in-game depictions of child mistreatment.
"There is no reason [for fans] to be alarmed" about any of these changes, a Void Interactive official said in a prepared statement, noting that the developer only elected to censor content that its platform partners "flagged as absolutely required." Even these mandatory instances of censorship were handled carefully, with the full intent to preserve the game's tone. The console versions of Ready or Not should hence offer an authentic experience.
While the limited content changes were prompted by console certification standards, some will also be applied to the PC version of the tactical shooter. The distinction between cross-platform and console-specific censorship largely depends on feasibility and practicality. Simple texture swaps—such as altering in-game evidence to remove partial nudity or images of children—are one-time edits that Void Interactive can easily keep console-exclusive. However, modifying entire assets, like adding clothing to a nude character model, is significantly harder to deploy selectively. For the sake of maintainability, such changes will be implemented across all platforms.
Void Interactive believes that the vast majority of its newly confirmed changes are minor to the point of being barely noticeable. The most obvious exception is the dismemberment system, which is still present but was disabled for deceased enemies. The developer described this as an acceptable compromise on account of Ready or Not already discouraging the use of lethal force as a core design principle.
